Joonas Ahonen

Bio

Finnish pianist Joonas Ahonen developed a strong interest in contemporary music already at early age. Member of renowned Austrian soloist ensemble Klangforum Wien since 2011, Ahonen has appeared with a number of orchestras and ensembles such as the Finnish RSO, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Avanti! and Ictus.

A dedicated chamber musician, Ahonen has performed West Cork Chamber Music Festival and Davos Festival. His regular collaborators include violinist Pekka Kuusisto, cellist Timo-Veikko Valve and soprano Agata Zubel. Ahonen also has a continuous interest in historical pianos. His recent fortepiano performance of Beethoven Diabelli Variations at the Wiener Konzerthaus left the audience and the critics excited.

Albums featuring Ahonen have been published by Col Legno, Kairos, Neos and CD Accord labels. His recording of Ligeti Piano Concerto with BIT20 Ensemble conducted by Baldur Brönnimann will be released in December 2016 by BIS Records.

  • “The second book of Ligeti etudes, a set of small but epically conceived virtuosic works was mind-blowing under Ahonen’s fingers.”

    Irish Examiner July 10th 2013
  • “Extraordinarily soft piano playing from the impressive Joonas Ahonen.”

    Bachtrack.com June 28th 2013
  • “His agility is amazing and his sound, the lightest and most precise that could be imagined.”

    Clarín December 1st 2012
  • “Joonas Ahonen played the whimsical Ligeti Piano Concerto as it was Mozart, perfectly relaxed and with an astonishing ease.”

    De Standaard May 18th 2009
  • “The concert of Joonas Ahonen was a reminder of the fact that one of pianist’s duties is to blot out the issue of a piano having hammers. One doesn’t need to pound to create a big sound. A true sensation was the performance of Concord Sonata by Charles Ives.”

    Helsingin Sanomat April 4th 2009

  • “Joonas Ahosessa on persoonallisuutta, suurta taitoa ja rohkeaa näkemystä, jota kuuntelee korvat höröllään.”

    Helsingin Sanomat November 16th 2014
