Joonas Ahonen

Bio

The Finnish pianist Joonas Ahonen has a scope of activities from Beethoven interpretations on historical pianos to the first performances of the music of our time. Ahonen joined Klangforum Wien in 2011, a few years after graduating from the Sibelius Academy where he studied with Tuija Hakkila and Liisa Pohjola.

Ahonen’s appearances on BIS Records, Ligeti Piano Concerto with BIT20 Ensemble and Ives Sonata nr. 2, “Concord”, have won great critical acclaim. His recent performances include West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Musiq’3 Festival in Brussels, Pekka Kuusisto’s Our Festival in Tuusula, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra as well as touring with selected Ligeti Studies in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker production “Achterland”.

  • “The second book of Ligeti etudes, a set of small but epically conceived virtuosic works was mind-blowing under Ahonen’s fingers.”

    Irish Examiner July 10th 2013
  • “Extraordinarily soft piano playing from the impressive Joonas Ahonen.”

  • “Joonas Ahonen played the whimsical Ligeti Piano Concerto as it was Mozart, perfectly relaxed and with an astonishing ease.”

    De Standaard May 18th 2009

    Diapason Magazine 2017
  • “The concert of Joonas Ahonen was a reminder of the fact that one of pianist’s duties is to blot out the issue of a piano having hammers. One doesn’t need to pound to create a big sound. A true sensation was the performance of Concord Sonata by Charles Ives.”

    Helsingin Sanomat April 4th 2009

    Classica 5/2017
  • “Ahonen’s playing never loses focus or composure, whether hurtling through torrents of notes in the outer movements of the Ligeti Piano Concerto or underpinning the melancholy introspection in its central ones with an unadorned single line.”

    The Guardian January 25th 2017

    Opusmagasin March 10th 2017
  • “Joonas Ahosessa on persoonallisuutta, suurta taitoa ja rohkeaa näkemystä, jota kuuntelee korvat höröllään.”

    Helsingin Sanomat November 16th 2014

    Hufvudstadsbladet February 5th 2018
  • “Der finnische Pianist Joonas Ahonen glänzte mit seiner Interpretation von Raphaël Cendos Corps.”

    Österreichische Musikzeitschrift 1/2018
  • “Ahonen presenta eccezionale abilità e chiarezza dell’articolazione.”

il Corriere Musicale February 23th 2017
